UNLESS FIRST WE DREAM

The Story of  The Great American Flag

America is in turmoil today, divided as it has not been since its Civil War. The principles of its Constitution, and the body of law that ensued to enabled America’s ascension to world leadership are eroding. So, it seems a good time to be reminded of our beginnings, of what our Founding Fathers labored to establish, of how we came to world leadership, and to address how we seem to be losing what defined us.

United States that is divided as we now appear is an oxymoron, an evident contradiction that cannot long last, and certainly cannot lead. It is a betrayal to our Constitution and all we have until recently stood for in the eyes of the World.

It is a familiar story. There was Rome, and suddenly there were “The Dark Ages”, a rise and fall pattern if one goes back far enough that has repeated itself over and over again for millennia. Civilizations rise, lead, spoil, fail, and are replaced by new ones. That’s history. People that ignore history are doomed to repeat it.

We, the United States, are ignoring history. The Thirteen Colonies that formed our nation had more essential differences than commonalities. To begin with several were establish based upon strongly held and unique religious beliefs. Others were dependent upon a particular agricultural product. Some were mountainous, others were characterized by flatlands. The small dairy farmer in Vermont had little in common with the plantation owner of the Carolinas, or of the trader in New York. But they knew they needed to join together, to unite to survive and thrive.

Two hundred and fifty years later that necessity remains a constant, for America to survive and prosper we must remain united. Or, to put it perhaps closer to home, married, and dedicated to the success of our marriage. And as in any marriage, respect and compromise are the lubricants to success in all aspects.

And this is why Carl Sandburg said:

The Republic is a dream. Nothing happens unless first we dream!
